[Letter from Managing Editor Kirsty Brown]
Brag readers, this is a call to arms.
If you have this magazine in your hands, then you are a lover and supporter of music – whether you know it or not. But now, the time has come for you to take that just one step further. We need your help to Save FBi, Sydney’s greatest community radio station, from going under.
Do you know what a life without FBi would be like? Take for one, you’d never hear any music from Sydney on the radio, until it reached the proportions of The Presets now (but not earlier, you’d have never even heard Beams) – that means, no Lost Valentinos, no Regular John, no Pivot, no Sarah Blasko, no Mess Hall and certainly no Bridezilla. These artists would have more luck making a career for themselves by moving to Melbourne – a city supported by a diverse and powerful community radio scene. And aren’t we sick and tired of this battle amongst our cities? To lose FBi would surely cede victory to Melbourne- they could officially say that we Sydneysiders don’t give a fuck about anything, then they’d continue on, wearing their polyester vintage and looking all smug. Who can handle a world like that? Not us dear reader, not us.
What FBi means goes further than what can be conveyed on these pages. For most, it is an alternative to the norm- a place where the undiscovered, the brand new, the leftfield and genre-undefined can easily find a home. It is a place where scenes are born- take for example the crews from the Sunsets programming: dance music stalwart (and Deep Impressions columnist) Simon Caldwell, DJs Ro Sham Bo, Kato, Anna Lunoe, Shantan Wantan Ichiban, James Taylor and Ben Morris, who’d suddenly find themselves unable to share the incredible music they are passionate enough to hunt out weekly. Would clubs in Sydney allow them to promote nights without a guaranteed audience? Who can say, but who wants to take the risk?
Then you’ve got people like Jack Shit, crate-digging like a bastard and using his show to talk about the best of the Arts each week. Triple M, Today FM and Nova, dear Braglets, do not give a shit about local theatre, local music and what you should do this weekend. FBi does. And they go to a hell of a lot of trouble to make sure that they are giving you the best of everything at their disposal. There are presenters like Stuart Buchanan who trawl the WORLD to bring you something new, different and exciting each week. We are pretty sure that no other station cares about you enough to do that. And they don’t shove advertising down your throat in order to do it either.
FBi needs you, but Sydney needs FBi more. Please sing up – visit the FBi website or call and offer a donation- big or small, your contribution sends a message that this situation is not acceptable, that we want a radio station that gives back and we are prepared to do something about it.
